i just had an awesome reunion with gail last thursday and friday! we hadn't seen each other in forever but as soon we started talking it was like we saw each other all the time. i had so much fun reminiscing about our dancing days with all the competitions and practices and the excitement and stress that accompany them. we even watched some video she had of us competing at my first championship competition. i know it's dorky, but it was really nice for us and made us miss the dancing all over again. *sigh* looking at that video, i wonder, was i really ever that athletically fit?? i didn't appreciate it at the time, but i sure do now!
we also spent a lot of time talking about college. eek! gail's going to merrimack as an austin scholar and majoring in civil engineering. i can't believe it! i remember when i was in eighth grade and she was going off to high school!! it was exciting talking about going and (for me) applying for college. hopefully i'll end up where i'm supposed to be after the whole crazy process is over. it seems as though gail is really happy with merrimack so i hope my college hunting turns out as well.
i am SOOO glad we finally got to see each other after all these years before she goes off to college. even though we don't dance anymore, we still have a lot in common and i'm so grateful that gail is still my friend!
like bridget, i also got my AC packet in the mail. maura and i have mr.murray for study!!! i think that's so funny! he'll be forced to learn who we are because he has to take attendance. he'll also probably use that study for greek. yikes! i really should start to study that. maura and i are also in homeroom 406! we're with bridget!! yay!! it's like freshman year all over again!!
i was very proud of myself today for walking three miles around the lake in wakefield in record time. even though it's strenuous, i feel so much better afterward that i exercised. it's so beautiful there by the water that i really wouldn't mind walking there everday. in fact, i'm going to try to!
~caitlin

well, it's been ages since i've written in my journal but better late than never. summer is perfectly wonderful so far and i'm so glad that i can sleep in, do nothing productive whatsoever, or take a walk to enjoy a warm breezy day. last week maura and i went to our grandparents' in the berkshires to do some old-fashioned house maintenance. we are now certified window restorers. we scraped, taped, and primed the windows, which haven't been painted since, in my grandfather's words, "lincoln was a boy." we didn't have time to apply the final coat of paint, but i'm content with what we got accomplished in a short amount of time. it's especially beautiful out there now, and i wish we could go back before the end of the summer.
this week we're planning to look at some local colleges, including BC. i'm hoping that one of them impresses me, because i really need a second choice after notre dame. *sigh* the problem is, no other college has all the things i'm looking for. i guess i just have to accept a school that has almost everything. i wish college hunting weren't so difficult.
i've finished "pride and prejudice" and "man's search for meaning", both of which i really enjoyed. "man's search for meaning" is especially interesting. the author, though jewish, seems to have a very catholic outlook on life, especially in terms of one's vocation. i'm anxious to discuss it in class next year. right now, i've just started "the grapes of wrath", which so far hasn't impressed me that much. hopefully things will change, since the book is 619 pages long!
besides the required summer reading, i've also been reading some of own books. i just finished evelyn waugh's "sword of honor" trilogy a few weeks ago. it was very good and extremely well written. the theme of "quantitative judgements don't apply" is quite thought provoking and was beautifully illustrated. waugh's "brideshead revisited" is still my favorite work, but "sword of honor" is a close second.
~caitlin

on friday bridget, sandy, maura and i celebrated the end of midterms by going to bridget's house and walking to downtown melrose. there we ate chocolate chip pancakes at cappa's trackside (mmmm... delicious!) before going to shaw's to look for bridget's and sandy's shaw's guy. we had a great time!! it was just like the old days, back when we had lives and school didn't smother us!! later, we got our exercise by walking to the mall where danielle met us. it was a lot of fun! i even got a really cute pair of shoes!!! i'm definitely going to wear them on the next tag day!!
and then on saturday maura and i had a lovely time with ally!! i drove all the way to malden and managed to make it to ally's house alive. i was very proud of myself! despite almost getting run over by a pickup truck which barreled through a four way stop sign right near my house, almost hitting an errant christmas tree in the middle of the road, and getting lost off ferry st. so that i had to call ally, i made it!!! we had an awesome movie night watching nick, nora, and asta solve a murder and replaying our favorite moments from "a philadelphia story"! ("hello dexter...hello george...hello mike!!") ;) *sigh* i'm so glad midterms are over. now we can hopefully have a life on the weekends...
time it was and what a time it was
a time of innocence
a time of confidences
long ago it must be, i have a photograph
preserve your memories
they're all that's left you

~caitlin

i just got back a couple of hours ago from the dedication mass for our enlarged church. even though i miss the way the church used to look, the enlarged church is quite striking and beautiful! we received many things from other old churches that have been recently closed in and around boston. gorgeous stained glass windows, a amazing altar with connemara marble, and a reredo (the back wall of the altar) that is solid oak carved intricately with two figures guarding the tabernacle. it's breathtaking really. and the ceremony could not have been more magnificient!! archbishop o'malley presided as they performed the rite of dedication by annointing the altar and walls of the church and presenting the relics of st. john bosco, st. therese of lisieux, and elizabeth ann seton to be placed within the altar. all of it was incredible! the music, the ancient rites, everything!! the church was filled to capacity (about 800) and the downstairs church was also packed.
at the end of the ceremony, our pastor got up to speak to the parishoners. i know that he has had a very hard and stressful time during the building, trying to raise money and oversee the construction. and so when he started to speak, he began to cry! immediately, everyone stood up and gave him a long standing ovation. i was so happy for him!! he's a wonderful man, and i know that such affirmation meant everything to him. i don't think he knew how much people appreciate and love him. it was very touching to see. and every time he was overcome, everyone would clap to encourage him.
this day was remarkable not only for the (re)dedication of the church but also for our pastor. i'm so glad that he was able to see how much everyone cares for him. i truly believe that God had a hand in today's dedication and our pastor's reception by the congregation. thank you, God, for everything!
*tea in the rosegarden*
~caitlin

i just returned yesterday from the green fields and rolling hills of warner, NH. the classes i took at magdalen were really good, especially catechesis. the subject, of course, i thought was really interesting and the tutor was wonderful. my fellow students were really nice also and i met a girl there who i think might become a great friend! it was awesome!!
there were three guys there from foreign countries...manuel from mexico, herbert from el salvador, and francesco from rome, italy. all of them were incredibly nice and hopefully i'll keep in touch with herbert and francesco. francesco's father is a diplomat, so he lives in D.C. right now, but he's moving back to italy soon, and offered to show me around rome when i go there next year. how cool is that?? i wonder if mr. murray would allow him to show us around?
my favorite days there was spent on the field trips. lol we went to a private beach in portsmouth on sunday. we played games next to the water and swam all afternoon! it was especially important for me because before sunday i was afraid of the beach, as you all know (stupid ocean book!!). haha however, on sunday i overcame my fear and had an awesome time. now i love the beach!!
on wednesday we went to boston. we went to the charlestown navy yard, the old north church, the north end, and quincy market. the funnest part was the north end. we stopped at a pastry chop and i got a canoli. yum!! but the most interesting part was visiting two of the oldest churches in boston. we got to tour st. mary's in charlestown because we ran into a guy there who used to work at magdalen and he gave us a private tour. the church is gorgeous!! even more, i think, than holy cross cathedral. the altar was gold and breath taking stained glass windows lined the walls of the church. it was really amazing!!
after that, we went to st. leonard's in the north end. it is the first church in boston built by italian immigrants. once you go inside, you think you're in a renaissance church in rome!! it even has a dome over the altar with frescoes painted on it! it was really neat!! i'm so glad that we went there!!
and lastly, on friday, we went canoeing on the merrimack. it was sooooo much fun!! we had about eight or ten canoes and i was in the lead one with francesco and mr. st pierre (who attends magdalen and was one of the leaders). we had a tipping war!!! it was every canoe for itself. haha we tipped like ten canoes!! but getting tipped ourselves was fun too, even more i think, then tipping someone else's. we would fall in the water and go under, and then francesco and mr. st pierre righted the canoe and we'd try to get back in. however, because i'm so short, often my feet wouldn't touch the bottom, so francesco and mr. st pierre had to lead the boat closer to shore so i could climb back in. lol once, however, the water was too deep, so mr. st pierre had to lift me into the boat. haha
we went to these awesome cliffs of sand like four stories high. (i'm not exaggarating!!) the cliffs were practically vertical and we all climbed up them (a very painful business for my legs!! and then we'd run down really fast and jump into the water below. kevin, i think you would appreciate this!! it was really scary at first, because you're running literally straight down. however, i climbed up and did it four times!! on the last one, however, i nearly killed myself!! i was racing my friend marie and i was running down the fastest i had yet when i tripped at the last minute on the hump of sand right before the water. bam!! i fell face first into the water. everyone got really quiet thinking i had really hurt myself. when i was falling i was really scared that i was going to hit my face on the bottom and break my nose or something. it was the edge of the water so it was pretty shallow. however, amazingly, i didn't get hurt badly. my eyes hurt for a bit, but that was it.
so after that close encounter, we left the sand cliffs and my canoe was way ahead of anyone else's. we reached this really tall highway overpass with a rope hanging down. of course, francesco and mr. st pierre especially wanted to swing off of it into the water. i was scared to do this at first because there were a lot of rocks you had to swing over before you were over the water. however, after both of the guys did it, mr. st pierre told me how to do it and i did it!!! i landed in the water and didn't hit anything!! i was so proud!! haha it was really fun, but we couldn't do it again because the other canoes were going to be there soon and mr. st pierre wanted our canoe to be the only one that had done it. lol so we left and finished the rest of the trip down the river.
i really had such an amazing time!! i don't think i could have imagined myself doing such risky stuff back home. but somehow i wasn't too scared to do things like that when i was there.
i know that this is a really long entry, but i just had to write down all of the cool stuff that we did! :)
*tea in the rosegarden*
<3caitlin

i had a great time at meaghan's on thurs./fri!! it was wonderful talking about the "old days", the present and the future i.e. going to NUIG in 2009 (!). meaghan and her sister just got ipods, and we showed off our amazing technical abilities by setting up both ipods on the computer after many hours of arduous labor!! and i discovered that i have a special way with dogs because emmet (her welsh corgie) really liked me and even sat on my lap when we watched a movie late thursday night. i'm so glad that meaghan and i have kept in touch all these years even though we hardly see other anymore and live far part. it's amazing really. and i'm very grateful for it. hopefully the friendships i have with all my friends will stay as strong and last as much as this one has! :)
friday night bridget, ally, danielle, and sandy came over to watch "mr. smith goes to washington." the movie was wonderful (how could it not be with jimmy stewart in it??). it was even better than i remembered. and all of us hadn't gotten together in a while, so i am doubly glad that we finally had our classic movie night!!
sunday i went to the lake in wakefield and sat by the water reading "the first circle" all afternoon. it was very enjoyable!! i already read "one day in the life of ivan denisovich" some time ago, and loved it. so, i decided to read another of solzhenitsyn's works. the first circle is actually even better than "one day" i think. both stories take place in prisons, though "one day" takes place in a brutal work camp, and "the first circle" takes place in a "sharashka" or prison where specialized prisoners develop top secret technology for the soviet government. the way "the first circle" is written is incredibly clever. the sentences are full of irony and sarcasm. it actually makes one feel quite intelligent when one understands the ironic or sarcastic references solzhenitsyn makes. i'm a little over half way through the book, and am planning on reading "the gulag archipelago" when i'm done. this book is supposed to be one of solzhenitsyn's finest. mr. grace should be proud of me!!
i had observation today. jimmy casey was driving. an old acquaintance, no? except for pulling out too soon and almost having a car hit us in the beginning, he did alright. but i'm nervous for when i'm the driver. i'll need to practice a lot these next few weeks, i think, before i'll feel confident. trying to persuade my parents to take me out more is not easy.

*tea in the rosegarden*
<3 caitlin

TGIF!!! only six more days of school!!! woohooo!!!! :) except of course, i'm swamped with hw. i don't know why teachers insist on weighing students down on long weekends!!! it's only one day!!! how much more can one get done on one day? and also i would like to have that day to myself, thank you very much!!
oh well. it can't be helped. teachers will be cruel. i think i shall try to get a lot done tomorrow and try to relax monday. my parents have to go to a wedding tomorrow anyway, so i'll probably be stuck in the house all day. no chance for driving. *sigh*
perchance people would like to do something this weekend?? we haven't gotten together outside of school in forever it seems (forever being since last friday lol). any suggestions would be welcome...
i watched "joan" tonight. it was a repeat, but still really good. imagine talking to God and actually seeing him!! how cool would that be!! *sigh* i hate that they cancelled the show. something like that on television is rare. i know, my disappointment is rather dorky, but i can't help it. i still wish i were jane...

*tea in the rosegarden*
<3caitlin

    <lj:music>church song (can't remember name)</lj:music>

i'm now officially an adult in the eyes of the church. i have full responsibility for the development of my faith. awesome!!! i thought the ceremony was beautiful and bishop irwin's sermon was really nice, even though i had heard most of it at bridget's confirmation a couple of weeks ago. lol and it was absolutely lovely having bridget, ally, danielle, and sandy there!! thank you all for coming!!! it meant alot to me!! and of course, mrs. anderson is the best sponsor ever. she must be the sweetest lady i have ever met. she treats maura and i like daughters, and is constantly telling us how grateful she is to know us, when really it should be the other way around. i'm that, according to all reports, i didn't mess up the second reading. i was really nervous, so i'm glad it came out well. after the mass, the whole family went out to dinner, which was nice, and we all had a lovely time. and i know that bridget, ally, danny, and sandy had a great time at the mexican restaurant. so all's well that ends well!!

tomorrow my dad promised me that he would take me driving!! i hope this is true, since i have yet to experience the thrills and dangers of driving on an actual road. i'm very anxious to get my lincense, and the driver's ed person keeps telling us to practice at home. so hopefully i'll be able to practice tomorrow.

i would write more, to make up for my appalling absence from my journal for the last few weeks, but i'm tired, and so i'm going to bed! :) goodnight! lol

*tea in the rosegarden*
~caitlin

we have a pope!!!!!!!! cardinal ratzinger (now pope benedict XVI) was just elected the holy father of the catholic church. and i'm glad. he was a very close friend of pope john paul II and will continue pope john paul's legacy. i watched his greeting "urbi et orbi" (to the city and to the world). he seems kind and humble. i think the cardinals were truly guided by the holy spirit in electing him. i thank God for our new holy father and pray for him as he guides the church. viva il papa!!

i started drivers ed today!!! at first i didn't want to, because i thought it would be easier to wait for the summer. but when maura and everyone else signed up, my mom urged me to take it to. so i did. and i'm glad. it's exciting! maybe i'll actually get my license at the end of june!!!!

as everyone knows, i got my semi dress!!!! :) it's so pretty! it's light pink with large flowers embroidered with some sort of sequins (spelling?). and it has a cute waist that encircles it with three flowers. i think it's the lovliest dress i've ever had. i'm so happy!

julius caesar quote test tomorrow. definitely not exciting, but hopefully i'll do alright. there's only two days till vacation (!) so i think i can hang on until then.

i hope we have a classic movie night sometime next week. (hint hint allisyn!) i'm in the mood for a nice old-fashioned movie with endearing but admittedly somewhat geeky quotes. buffalo gals won't you come out tonight? won't you come out tonight? won't you come out tonight? buffalo gals won't you come out tonight AND dance by the light of 'da moon!!! ;)

mrs. anderson, my confirmation sponsor and old 1st and 6th grade teacher, is coming over for dinner saturday night. i'm somewhat nervous, (she was my teacher!!) but she's one of the best people around and i've known her for a long time. so hopefully everything will turn out alright and she'll have a good time with the family.

i must go study julius caesar now. *sigh*
*tea in the rosegarden*
<3caitlin

i love my church. at mass this morning, father brown gave a wonderful sermon about many things, including "the disciple whom jesus loved" finding the tomb empty. even though many people believe that this disciple is john, father brown said that he believes it to be lazarus. which is i think, an interesting idea. in the gospel, the first person to believe that jesus rose is this disciple. lazarus had experienced rising from the dead, and therefore father brown said he would be the first to recognize that jesus did the same. laying the burial clothes aside would seem to him natural, lazarus having down the same, because the clothes were tight and uncomfortable. even though no one can be sure who this disciple is, i think father brown has a good guess. he is very knowledgeable about the bible and ancient history and customs. i know this is somewhat of a random thing to write about, but i thought it was interesting...

i hope everyone has a wonderful easter!!!!

*tea in the rosegarden*
<3caitlin

i apologize for not updating for a month. as everyone already knows, life has been pretty busy as of late. between manadnock, danielle's b-day party in portsmouth, and school i have had no time to go on the computer, never mind update my journal. but the easter vacation has started and i can finally sit down and update. yay!!

i love shakespeare!! we're now on act III in julius caesar in english and i love reading it. my favorite part so far has been marc antony's funeral oration. i really liked how antony kept repeating "and brutus is an honorable man". the sarcasm is perfect. shakespeare was so clever. if only i could write like that...

AP exam!!! ahhh!!! i'm going to start studying tomorrow. i am! i am! iam!! i must discipline myself, or i will never do it. i love history, but i don't care to read about the really ancient civilizations except rome and greece. and that's why i haven't been able to get myself to move beyond the first thousand years of civilization. haha oh well!! tomorrow i'm going to go into bridget mode and really try to make a dent in the history of mankind. ;)

i'm very excited about going to rome next year!!! i still can't believe mr. murray is actually going to take us. he's going to be the best tour guide in the world, because he seems to know everything about everything. i know i'll probably never be able to go to rome again, so i'm going to try to get the most i can out of the trip.

i think i did well on my make-up theology test today. (danielle, don't say i told you so!! lol) ms. meehan was really weird though. she's paranoid. she put me in ms. kelleher's classroom and moved my desk practically up into the doorway so that i could be observed from the hall. then, she confiscated all of my books and my calculator. and all i had with me was algebra, my theology books were already put away. i'm insulted that she would think i would cheat using a notebook or something from a different subject. she then went back into her room, where she held onto my books until i passed the test in. grrr....i do not think taking away my books was necessary. just add this to the long list of complaints that i have about ms. meehan.

tomorrow is drama practice 10-2. BLAH!! oh well, i'll get to see the lovely ally, so it won't be too bad. i'm sure she'll find many ways to amuse me. haha ;)

*tea in the rosegarden*
<3caitlin

i had a lovely time with meaghan on friday!!! even though we hardly ever see each other anymore, when we do, we can talk as if we still see each other all the time. first, we went to downtown andover to look at all the expensive stores, and i got the best gingerbread muffin in the world at some small shop there. yum!! we sat in the shop and talked about lots of things. i'm so glad that meaghan is still as excited as i am about going to galway for our junior year of college. it's gonna be so fun!!! and if we don't meet our hot irish guys this summer in canton, we will definitely meet them there. haha mr. mcginty is going to contact someone he knows at the university, so hopefully we will have information soon about what to do in order to go to galway together as roommates in 2009! :) (also, i have interesting news for all the AC people: mr.mcginty works with mr. doherty's (as in AC's theology mr. doherty) brother. weird huh? very strange connections!)

on saturday maura and i worked on the chem project. blah!!! we finished it today, and i hope we get a good grade. goodness knows we spent enough time on it to get a A at the least. *sigh* mrs. o'connell is so aggravating sometimes.

maura and i also watched "sense and sensibility" saturday. i loved it. i love listening to the way people talked in the 1800s. and edward and colonel barton are so chivalrous and honorable!! and they ride on horses and the ladies wear beautiful dresses, and the dashwood sisters are so sweet...i know, i'm a dork, but i don't care. i really like that type of thing. and maura really liked it too, so i'm not the only one. haha

let's see...today i didn't do anything in particular except finish the stupid chem thing. i wish that vacation wasn't over because this one has been so busy. i need at least another week!! i hear it might snow monday into tuesday though, so i'll keep my fingers crossed!

*tea in the rosegarden*
<3 caitlin
